IIU 8th Inter-school Debate Championship 2009

this year, we have 5 teams from Taiping, i think. MRSM 1 team, SGI 2 teams and SMC 2 teams. so, SGI and SMC went together since don't have private bus. On the 24th, we went to Kamunting bus station and went straight to Pudu. During the journey, it was boring as i was awake the whole time, fortunately there's a device call handphone which made capable of curing my boredom by playing the games in it and some slight sms-ing, although in the same bus, but still just for the sake of not being bored, haha. Upon reaching, we stopped at somewhere near Pudu, and we stood at there since the teacher doesn't want to walk to Pudu. So, Lavin went to Pudu to find his bro and brought him to us to lead us to the LRT which was 10 minutes away as a way to punish the Convent teacher. In fact, there was a shorter way which only requires 3 minutes of walking perhaps? to reach the LRT station if we walk to Pudu, which was only 1-2 minutes away. So, she ended up the slowest in catching up. Then, reach d, we bought the tickets and went to IIU using a bus from Gombak. Finally, we reached IIU.

But we have to wait outside the main hall because Mr.Koay haven't arrive. So, the SMC team went in because the teacher was there. Even so, it was ok since we chatted all the way until Mr.Koay reached. After he arrived, we too entered and started registering. Then, we took the food. It was quite a nice meal plus the drink. Then, we went to our apartment aka Ameenah or something like that and we got the room D4.7 and D 4.8. Every rooms have 2 sub-rooms which has a total of 4 beds plus the 2 rooms were connected by the toilet, so we can lepak at each others room at anytime. At night, we went to the hall for a grand dinner which is the opening ceremony too. Before i went there, they said it's very nervous to see so many ppl but ended up no feeling at all even when so many participants were there, since it was just like any other events everyone have gone to, wedding, chinese celebrations and so on. At here, there were some jokes made by Vignes such as getting the trophy back to get a closer view (as if he's already the champion) and asking another guy, different school about his crooked eye. this is the question "sorry to ask this, but is there anything wrong with your eye?". Lol, it was like so obvious and he had to ask it. Anyway, in that dinner, Lavin ate with the other teachers from other schools because he got the teacher tag, lol and we kept tease him "Cikgu Lavin". haha. The food was damn little as we weren't full after eating it and I swept quite a lot of watermelons, haha. Starting straight clean up the whole plate of watermelon and got another 1, after that, sweep again. lol, after all that, we went back to the dorm and buck up for the next day.

The following day which was 25th was the day we start our championship. We woke up at 7 and went to the auditorium by 8, and got some super early breakfast there since my breakfast normally ranges from 10-12, near to lunch 1, haha. In the auditorium, we sat at the middle row, a total of 2 rows cuz SMC and us sat together. Started of with roll call, then mock debate and some teaching about debate (which we knew about). The mock debate was a joke since it was a one-sided debate where the IIU team go against 3 MRSM volunteers, different places though the MRSM, in fact there were more than 20 MRSM schools participated in the championship. the motion was "This House Would ban violent online games" and one of them made a super joke by saying "We watch violent show every day, we watch nude everyday". Then, he was stunned by himself a little. And everyone was laughing. After his speech, the Mr.Speaker said "now, we all know what's his past time is", haha. And he was a Malay wearing songkok. Then, it went on and on until it was over. Finally, they started off the real thing. The draw and the match ups. Starting, we got room 54 and debated against a school, MRSM Muadzam Shah team B. the motion was THW abolish school uniforms, and they set it in India (we were the Opp) and we won easily. We didnt ask the margin but it should be clear win. Then, we went back to the auditorium and we waited there, went to lunch and sit back at there till evening and they released another draw. This time we were in room 37 but it was weird because the room is follow ranking, we won 1 match and our room was so low, supposedly to be above 20 to the very least because the 1 we defeated were in room 21 or somewhere there if not mistaken. This time, we debated about replacing the public exam to university entrance exam and we were the Gov. We won again but this time, we gave a bad 1. Out opponent was a joke, they were more like Datuk Wira contenders with the "mixed hormone guy" in that team, which is Semesti team B. The last part was the most enjoyable 1 cuz he asked the adjudicator himself "who is the best speaker in this round?" and he was the 2nd speaker in his team (opposition). Then, she replied, it's the Deputy... (fuh, this part, you can see his face smiling d man although they knew they lost the debate to us) Prime Minister. So, it was actually me, the best speaker in that round. His face straight change back to sour man, double blow. Lost debate, then thought can get best speaker, see see not him. hahahaha. But we know we lack matter in that part, so we were not that happy also and they ended up cancelling 1 round of 7 preliminary rounds because lack of time. So, that was the end of today.

Next was 26th, today we'll have 4 debates. As usual, we went to the auditorium early which is 7 plus (normal time, not that early). This time we went to higher room, room 15, it was nice and we debated about THW pay morbidly obese people to lose weight, we were the Gov and we won again. It was great winning this round and it was a clear win again although we could've thrashed them mainly because we didnt really understand the word "morbid" which was later explained better by Lavin and Mr.Koay. Then, we went straight to the auditorium and waited got another draw, cuz they lack time, so have to debate more. This time we were happy as we were placed in room 5 against SMS Hulu Selangor team A, lol. When the 1st list of motion was released, everyone was super shocked cuz no one understand the motions at all. I'll list down the motions for you, 1st, THBT J.O.H.N. is better than ISO 9000, 2nd, THBT Six Sigma provides modernization and last, THBT the solution to crisis in detroit lies in the adoption of bla bla bla, which i didnt copy anymore cuz it was just a troll. Then, they release the real theme of the moion, HUMOUR, everyone straight clapped, lol. So, we debated on THBT Christiano Ronaldo should stop shaping his eyebrow. Weird 1, huh? Lol, but it was good la, cuz I know about about Ronaldo. So, it was nice debating it. Haha, this time, Boo made himself especially useful cuz he has the grasps of jokes in his hands. Starting i thought i was gonna flop man in this round cuz i normally dont make jokes even in real life, now applying in the speech but somehow my speech became humorous. Somehow, haha (no ones gonna believe that i made everyone in the hall laugh while giving a speech). I got witnesses which saw me making joke in my speech! they are my team which is Ken Lin, Stephenas and Boo and another spectator from Taiping, Sophia. lol, starting, i keep ask her dun watch but she ended up watching, luckily for me didnt humiliate myself on top, haha. After that, we go for lunch. and went back to the auditorium. Then, they release another draw, the 5th round. This time we were against a favourite, RMC team A, and we were the Gov. It was a motion themed sports, THW stop football matches if racist chanting occurs during the match and we lost, shit.. Actually we could've won if we defended it slightly better but they were the better team that round, so it's cool. So, our lead of 4-0 was gone become 4-1. We lost by a slight margin but could've won la in fact. Then, we went for dinner. At night, we had the last round of the preliminaries, against KYS team B and we were the Opp (actually this team is the 1st team of their college but trying to follow Star who normally put their 1st team as team B, so that ppl will let their guard down on them and can protect their own faces by saying "i team B la, lose also nvm" that kind). This time, the theme was about Woman and we debated about THW pay stay home mothers as the Opp in room 6, this time, i was quite blur such that even after delivering my speech, i only got a clearer view about it, wondering what happened to me at that time. I understand the motion but somehow I lost focus about it. The team was crazy la, putting all facts in their speeches, saying like "all countries at that specific region has agreed on giving 0.8% of their economic development to help the rural people" and so on, about UN and more. It was tough la debating with them, and somehow this time, i got some goosebumps where my body shivered for the 1st time after 5 rounds debating even right before my speech (dunno why, but somehow it happened) and i ended up giving a bad speech, a really really bad 1 which could've cost us our lost. Worst of all, it was a silent round where the result wont be announced. I was down the whole night, thinking what happened to me and some slight reflecting and I gathered back my confidence because I realized in the middle of my thought if I keep feeling down, it would be another burden for my teammates and I shouldn't allow that even if we lost because of me. So, we just went to sleep.

Next day, would be 27th. Today would be he announcement of last night's silent round result and the result of who'll break to double octofinals. Fortunately enough, we won last night's silent round. So, we got a 5-1 in the 5 preliminary rounds, only RMC secured a 100% record, 6-0. However, out speakers score was low because we only met good teams in round 5 and 6. So our speakers score made up to be seeded in no.12 if not mistaken. SMC was in no.7 as their speakers score was higher and they met good teams, seriously. We should've been in the top 5, because we thrashed a few teams on our way and got a few clear victories but since we met teams which always doesnt engage, so it was always considered a below average debate and we ended getting highest marks for below average debate which is around 71-72, but if we were to get a above average debate, our speakers score would've been 74-77, sadly kept meeting bad teams, so it was bad la. So, St.George A and Convent Taiping A qualified for double octo-finals. Since Convent was in the top 8 teams, they started 1st. and ours was later, where we'll meet the 21st seeded team, which is SMI Al-Amin team A. We went to watch Convent's match 1st, supporting them but ended up losing and getting an enemy in the opponent's support team. She was like a bitch which made our team angry with her especially Lavin till he showed his middle fingers towards her, seriously she got some attitude problem and for the rest of the days we stayed there, we constantly glared at her. Me, Lavin and Darmesh especially, lol. Then, it was our turn, we going against Al-Amin A in room 6, this time, the theme was Media and Entertainment and we debated about THBT celebrities who commit crime should not qualify to receive industry awards as the Opp and we won. We won with a trashing margin. the chief judge gave us the win with a margin of 8.5, the other 2 judges gave the margin of 9 and 6. Cool man, the 3rd speaker was the best, he stood there for about 5 seconds thinking of words to be delivered, and the 1st speaker was also pro man, she gave a good quote which made the chief judge wrote in down "Mr.Speaker, we've answered the questions questioned by the Oppositions even before they were questioned", it was like, lol man. Straight made the whole hall laugh, a hall of more than 30 ppl. So, we qualified for the octofinals, the sole team from Taiping which is still standing. This time we went against dunno what school got the word Puteri inside 1, lol. The theme was We Love You Malaysia and we debated in room 7 about THBT Malaysian politicians involved in scandals pertaining to their private lives should resign and we were the Gov. We ended up losing, crap but actually we could've won it man. Our problem and stand was not bad which had contributed to our loss which was about violation to the social contract, which is our losing point but my points were the winning point. Since we focused too much on this losing point, we lost the whole debate, if only we give a better stand and better problem, definitely we could've won. This time too in the middle of the debate, there was a sudden shiver in my body (it reminds me of my round 6 against KYS) but somehow I was able to deliver a good speech which in the end beat the 2nd speaker from the opposition. Even after I delivered my speech, I was still in shiver a little. And a few times where I felt really really bad when there was a few sentences said by Stephenas and Ken Lin (probably it shouldn't be stated by them). But i was confident that we could have won this time because my points were standing. Despite that, we lost mainly because of the prob and stand. Sad case. Words of encouragement and consolation was given by Lavin after that. We lost and the margin was 2.5 by Latif and 0.5 by another judge and 9 (fucker, 9 man) by another judge called Sofia or whatever it is. My speech was better than their 2nd speaker and she put mine as 72 but gave their speaker 75 or 76, she was insane man. A margin of 9, as if we lost until so bad. But we ignore that score la, it was totally unreasonable, the best is to believe Latif's 1. And we came to a conclusion that she was biased. So, it was ok for me although disappointed. But Ken Lin was truly depressed as he thought his speech was the 1 that gave us the lost but it was actually the prob and stand. So, we went back to the dorm consoled by guys and girls and had a great night though. Joked the whole night and it was fun since we wont have things to do the following day. Boo came out with a joke this time saying "Ken Lin, you should sit on the table and reflect la" as a way of consolation, and we laughed like hell since it doesnt sound like consolation at all. He told him that mainly because that was what I did after the debate against KYS and was able to deliver 2 better speeches today.

28th, today we woke up late because we had nothing to do and take our time eating and walking to the faculty to watch the ending part of quarter-finals between SDAR and King George V. It was about interest rate and loans of foreign cars and SDAR won and qualified to semi against Green Road. This time, they got thrashed which the debate was about taking actions against CIA who torture during Bush administration. So, Green Road qualified for finals against SM Islam Hidayah or something like that. It was only 3 or 4 pm only that time and the finals was at 7 something. lol, so went to the faculty of engineering and find a room with air-con and sleep. About 15 of us in the room, SMC and SGI of cuz, where 3 of the SMC went to shopping. In that room, it was fun that we made loads of jokes and everyone was laughing. But decided to turn on the light, if get caught, gone case la. Islamic Uni some more. Then, we had some impromptu debate which constantly went out of topic, starting it was like quite childish to me, haha but Lavin was like quite interested, and was getting serious in it. lol, and later on, we too got slightly serious in it, haha. we won 5-4 and went for dinner. Dinner time, their teacher and 2 of the girls was back in time to eat, as usual and we proceeded to the finals venue although we already know the result. At there, we sat and waited for all the things and finally, the real thing started. It was about prisoners donating organs and Green Road won as the Gov, we expected Islamic Hidayah to lost but not to the fact that they were trashed, their 2nd point was so damn good that they talked about the quality of organs where they say as if the quality of prisoners and normal ppl was so different, we were in heart pain watching a school which is worse than us in the finals. So, the result was so damn clear even during their 1st speech and it was even more clear where you can see every discussing whenever Islamic Hidayah was giving their speech (because it was unreasonable) and kept quiet whenever Green Road was giving their speech. Then, we went back to the dorm again making all sorts of joke especially about Vignes getting the top speaker award, haha.

The last day, 29th was the day we check out and went to KLCC for fun. It was a little boring since there was no arcade, all shops but i guess the girls had fun there. And we came back to Taiping from 4pm and reach at 8 something. So long... however it was nice week to spend compared to being in school getting more and more homework everyday.

For everyone's info, Green Road is from Kuching, Sarawak. So, it was worthwhile for them to come all the way and won the whole championship defeating every single Peninsular team. Super proud for them when they go home. Anyway, talking about me, i found myself an enemy (a bitch), met many weird teams consisting weird genders, spent less than RM20 in KL after 6 days, got best speaker for round 2 which disappointed the opponent's 2nd speaker (really proud of that, i mean disappointing that guy), haha, found the bravery to sit beside girl (not yet the state of girls, scary man if 2 girls sit beside, that's how ken lin kena bully when May Khei sengaja sit beside him, and he straight felt uneasy, I know the feeling, so dun worry ken lin, haha), a triangle love story we created out between Boo, Sarviineash and a girl from convent, and i did a good thing, helping the girls to carry their bag when coming back to Taiping, from LRT station until bus station, get to know that this championship is slightly biased, but only found 2 of them, a timekeeper and a judge, learn to console ppl and getting back confidence in short time and perhaps giving a speech in a slightly bigger crowd, although I'll be doing it every week cuz I MC in my school every Thursday, and MU won man against Arsenal last night, WOOO!! oh ya, and we cheered the loudest every time for roll call, cool, it's like St.George Taiping?? "YES!!!", whole hall also can hear man, lol, then that guy will say "very good or excellent", we also found out that Latif and Adam was among the best judges there and have been adjudicated by both of them, quite nice. There were about 116 teams this time competing and we only got into the top 16, perhaps top 12 la, haha, saw a few teams which really suck. (will update more if i remember, that's all for now.)
